About Gibsons Family Network
Gibsons Family Network (GFN) is a non-profit group of family
members with a
vision of helping people with disabilities to find
meaningful, integrated employment within our community.
Our mandate is to enable people
with developmental disabilities full citizenship in our
community.
The philosophy of the Gibsons
Family Network is the belief that everyone is born with
abilities. This philosophy allows everyone to reach his or her
potential and to thrive as a contributing member of society.
GFN began as an association of families
living in Gibsons, BC who have a family member or relative
with a developmental disability. The group formed in 2004
and incorporated as a non-profit society in March 2006 in
order to move forward to meet the need for more services on
the Sunshine Coast. And in December of 2008, we received our
charitable status.
We network with each other and the community at large
regarding relevant and emerging issues related to community
inclusion.
We value new ideas and innovation and we constantly seek to
improve our knowledge and effectiveness.
GFN promotes public awareness of our issues through special
projects and the media. We provide individual and group
advocacy for people with developmental and intellectual
disabilities. We share information and self-help skills with
individuals and families. We work to develop partnerships
with other community organizations and businesses to promote
inclusion and enable people with disabilities to realize
their potential.
