We have operated two successful
pre-employment training classes at the Old Library in lower
Gibsons. We would like to thank the Town of Gibsons for allowing
us to use their facility for this project. Eight young people
have received training in food preparation, handling money,
making change, dealing with the public, food safe and hygiene,
reading labels, and general skills for working in the community.
Work experience will begin at the
kiosk as soon as it opens in the new year. We have been given
permission to operate from 10am to 2pm Monday through Thursday
at the Gibsons Recreation Centre. 2-3 people will work in
shifts each day so that everyone has an opportunity to try out
their skills and see if this is a job they would like to
continue.
There has been a lot of interest
in continuing the training program for those who will be
graduating from high school in the next couple of years. We are
hopeful that we will be able to show our success and find
financial support to continue with a youth-in-transition program
as well as supporting adults who would like to try a work
experience at the kiosk.
Recreational Centre Update
2007
has been a busy year for Gibsons Family Network. Community
Living BC selected GFN’s proposal to develop a pre-employment
training program for youth-in-transition.
We worked with SCRD to develop a
plan to operate a kiosk at the two new
recreation centres in Gibsons and Sechelt. Unfortunately the space at the
Sechelt Recreation Centre was too small to accommodate a kiosk
but we have been given permission to operate a kiosk at the
Gibsons Recreation Centre.
We have encountered many
obstacles in pursuing our dream of operating a small food and
beverage kiosk but it has been a great learning opportunity. We
are restricted to what products we can serve. Coke has the
rights to the arena for beverage products and we are required to
provide 80% healthy food choices according to the Canada Food
Guide for Healthy Schools.
The community centre
was completed and opened on March 2008. Soon afterwards, with
the help of volunteers, parents, and the community, the kiosk
finally began operating. The kiosk is named Sunshine Shack and
open to serve the community from Monday to Thursday at 10:00 am
to 2:00 pm.
